Live and Let Die

Emily Murray

Emily Murray

Emily brought the kids over to Jenna’s. The kids had been playpen buddies being as they were born around the same time and Jenna had been Emily’s doctor, delivering Elizabeth only to go into labor a few days later. Jenna had cut her hours at the clinic and her office hours, she’d given up her job at the hospital as an attending physician. She’d also moved her office to her house. Emily had set up the cafe so it practically ran itself, she did ordering from home on her computer. When she had to be there Jenna babysat and Emily picked up the kids from school for Jenna. It worked for them. They were both able to keep their jobs and provide for their kids. They both knew there would come a time when they had to discuss the kids fathers with them, neither looked forward to that day. Both told their kids that their fathers had died. It wasn’t really a lie. At least not as far as Jenna was concerned, Emily had no knowledge of the vampires. All she knew was that Viktor had slept with her once and Elizabeth was the product of that. If anyone realized the child had her father’s eyes no one had said anything about it. Lucien was Alessandra’s father and Jenna knew exactly what he was. For five years Emily and Jenna had worked together to make each other’s lives easier. Emily had gone back to work at the cafe when Elizabeth started school.

Emily arrived at Jenna’s at 8 am. The kids were dressed and ready for school. Jenna would get them to school and Emily would pick them up from the bus stop later. Emily walked in and headed to the back of the house knowing Jenna would need coffee and possibly breakfast as well. The girls disappeared into Lessa’s play room. Emily smiled she could hear the girls talking and laughing. Jenna came down the back stairs. “Hey Em.” Emily smiled, “Good morning, Jenna. How was the party?” Jenna shook her head, “Typical. Boring.” Emily laughed, “No drama.” Jenna shook her head again, “Not this time.” Emily nodded, “Well.. *that* had to be a relief.” Jenna smiled, “Yeah…it was. I did see Viktor and Lucien.” Emily smiled, “Yeah… How are they.” Jenna nodded, “They seemed good. They looked good.” Emily smiled, “Yeah?” Jenna grinned, “Yeah.. Viktor looked really good, Em.” Emily nodded, “I’m sure he did. Jen, it’s been a long time. He probably doesn’t even realize I exist anymore. It was one night. We were friends before and after that he hasn’t even spoken to me.” Jenna nods, “I know Em.. I also know that Elizabeth is either his or Lucien’s and if I’m doing the math right she’s Viktor’s.” Emily blinks, “Yeah.. she is.” “Did you tell him?” “Did you tell Lucien?” It was Jenna’s turn to shake her head, “Point taken.” Emily nodded, “So what we have here is our kids are cousins.” Jenna smiles, “It would seem so.” Emily looked at Jenna, “How long have you known?” “Since her eyes changed. You aren’t going to be able to keep this secret forever.” “Neither of us are, Jenna.” “Emily….” Emily shook her head. “Don’t. It’s not going to change anything and telling him now won’t make any difference.” Jenna looks at her, “I know. I also know that Viktor at least would do what he could to help you.” Emily shakes her head, “I’m not going to have Elizabeth be an obligation.” Jenna sighs, “I understand.” Emily placed toast and coffee near Jenna. “The kids have been fed and are all set for school, lunches made and all is packed in their back packs. Jenna smiled, “Thanks Em.” “I also washed their nap stuff for school which is in there as well.” Jenna nodded, “I don’t know what I’d do without you Em.” Emily smiled, “You’d survive.” Jenna laughed, “Yeah but would Lessa?” Emily nods, “Yeah she would.” Emily smiled again, “All right I’ve got to get moving. Work calls.” Emily headed to the back door, as Jenna spoke, “I’ll pick them up and take them for dinner to give you a break.” Emily smiled, “Thanks Jen.” Emily climbed into her car and headed to the Cafe. Jenna sat and as she ate the toast contemplated the conversation until it was time to drop the kids at school.
